Total Hip Replacement

টোটাল হিপ রিপ্লেসমেন্ট (কোমরের জয়েন্ট প্রতিস্থাপন)

Replacing a damaged hip joint — from arthritis or avascular necrosis — to relieve groin pain and restore comfortable walking.

When does the hip need replacing?

The hip is a ball-and-socket joint. When its cartilage is badly damaged, walking becomes painful and the leg can become stiff or shorter. Common causes include:

  • Osteoarthritis of the hip
  • Avascular necrosis (AVN) — loss of blood supply to the ball of the hip
  • Rheumatoid and other inflammatory arthritis
  • Some old fractures of the hip

Symptoms

Pain in the groin, thigh or buttock, a limp, difficulty putting on socks or sitting cross-legged, and pain that disturbs sleep.

The operation

In total hip replacement, the damaged ball and socket are replaced with smooth artificial components. Early surgery for suitable AVN patients can make a real difference, so timely assessment is important.

Recovery

Most patients stand and walk with support within a day or two. With physiotherapy, many return to comfortable daily activity within six to twelve weeks. Precautions and exercises are explained in detail before discharge.

This page explains the treatment in general terms. Whether it is right for you is decided only after an examination and review of your X-ray or MRI.
